A Community in Crisis: Springfield's Haitian Neighbors Need Our Help
The Silence on Springfield's Streets
Drive through Springfield, Ohio, today, and you will notice what is missing.
The Haitian-owned restaurants that once filled the air with the aroma of griot and pikliz are closed. The bustling corner stores where families gathered to shop for familiar ingredients are shuttered. The churches that once rang with Creole hymns on Sunday mornings now sit quietly.
Where thousands of Haitian families once walked to work, shopped for groceries, and sent their children to school, there is now silence. Fear has emptied the streets.
The Invisible Crisis
Approximately 12,000 to 15,000 Haitian immigrants have called Springfield home. They came fleeing a country devastated by violence, poverty, and political collapse. They came seeking safety, opportunity, and the chance to build a future for their children.
They found work in our factories, our warehouses, and our healthcare facilities. They opened businesses that revitalized empty storefronts. They enrolled their children in our schools. They worshipped in our churches.
They became our neighbors.
But today, they are living in shadows. They are afraid to leave their homes for even the most basic necessities. They are afraid to go to work. They are afraid to buy groceries. They are afraid to visit the hospital when they are sick. They are afraid to pray in the churches where they once found solace.
The Daily Struggle to Survive
Imagine not being able to feed your children because you cannot safely go to the grocery store.
Imagine being ill and unable to see a doctor because the journey to the clinic could mean detention.
Imagine watching your family's food supply dwindle while you are trapped inside your own home, terrified of what awaits you outside.
This is the reality for thousands of Haitian families in Springfield today.
Many have lost their jobs. Many can no longer pay rent. Many are running out of food. Parents are watching their children go hungry, powerless to help them.
Children Are Paying the Price
The most heartbreaking dimension of this crisis is what it means for children.
Haitian parents are being forced to make impossible choices. Do they send their children to school and risk being detained during drop-off or pickup? Or do they keep them home and face truancy charges?
Some families have already begun signing power of attorney documents—giving temporary custody of their children to neighbors and friends. They are preparing for the possibility that they may be taken from their children at any moment.
No parent should have to prepare their child for the possibility of separation. No child should have to wonder if today’s last day is they will see their mother or father.
What We Can Do Together
This is not a crisis that can be solved by government alone. This is a moment that calls on each of us, as neighbors, as community members, as human beings, to open our arms and our hearts.
Now Haitians living in Springfield need us to be strong for them.
They Need Food
As families remain hidden in their homes, they run out of supplies. Simple groceries that most of us take for granted, rice, beans, cooking oil, baby formula, diapers, are becoming scarce. Food insecurity is a daily reality.
They Need Medicine
Health conditions do not pause during a crisis. Families cannot access pharmacies. They cannot visit clinics. They need help obtaining essential medications, especially for chronic conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure. Basic over-the-counter medicines that we can easily purchase are out of reach.
They Need Rent Assistance
With no work permits and no unemployment benefits, families cannot pay their rent or utility bills. They are at risk of eviction. They are at risk of losing their homes in the middle of this crisis.
They Need Our Presence
Beyond material needs, they need to know they are not alone. They need to feel that their community has not abandoned them. They need the simple human comfort of knowing that their neighbors see their suffering and care.
A Moment of Moral Choice
History will judge how we respond when our neighbors were suffering. We cannot control the decisions made in Washington, but we can control what happens here in Springfield.
When families are hiding in fear, we can bring food to their doorsteps.
When children are hungry, we can provide meals.
When parents cannot pay rent, we can offer assistance.
When people are suffering in silence, we can let them know they are seen, they are valued, and they are not forgotten.
How You Can Help
We need your help.
We are working to deliver food, medicine, diapers, and other essential supplies to Haitian families in Springfield. We are providing rent and utility assistance to families facing eviction. We are offering support, comfort, and a lifeline to people who have nowhere else to turn.
But we cannot do this alone.
Your donation, no matter how small, can help feed a family. Your contribution can help a mother obtain medicine for her sick child; a senior can get a medication refill. Your generosity can help keep a roof over a family's head.
We also need volunteers. We need people willing to help package and deliver supplies. We need people willing to offer rides to those who need to access services. We need people willing to stand with our Haitian neighbors during this dark time.
